How to raise successful kids — without over-parenting

It ' s simply that there ' s a specific design of parenting these days that is kind of messing up kids, impeding their possibilities to develop into theirselves. When we raise kids this method, and I'' ll say we, since Lord knows, in raising my two teens, I ' ve had these tendencies myself, our kids end up leading a kind of checklisted childhood. We seem to act– it ' s like we actually believe they will have no future if they don ' t get into one of these small set of careers or colleges we have in mind for them. (Applause) Not one'' s parents ' actions on one ' s behalf, but when one ' s own actions lead to outcomes. Now, am I saying every kid is determined and hard-working and doesn'' t require a parent ' s involvement or interest in their lives, and we should simply back off and let go?

It ' s just that there ' s a certain style of parenting these days that is kind of messing up kids, restraining their chances to develop into theirselves. We seem to behave– it ' s like we actually believe they will have no future if they don ' t get into one of these small set of careers or colleges we have in mind for them. (Applause) Not one'' s moms and dads ' actions on one ' s behalf, however when one ' s own actions lead to outcomes.
